The character of Richmond upon Thames and London’s Green Belt are at risk.
London’s Green Belt benefits all Londoners. It helps prevent urban sprawl, keeps communities distinct and provides the green open spaces that act as the lungs of our city. Once these spaces are lost to development, they are extremely difficult to replace.
But Sadiq Khan’s new London Plan proposes 56,100 homes on greenfield land across London, while pushing higher densities and taller buildings into suburban communities such as ours.
Here in Richmond upon Thames, the Plan sets a target of 5,397 new homes by 2036/37, around 540 every year for ten years, as well as five additional permanent Traveller pitches.
We need more affordable and family-sized homes. But they should be built in the right places, respect the character of our neighbourhoods and be supported by the schools, GP surgeries, transport and other infrastructure that growing communities need.
These proposals risk urbanising predominantly suburban areas, putting greater pressure on roads and parking and changing the character of the neighbourhoods that make our borough such a special place to live.
We can build the homes London needs without sacrificing the Green Belt, good planning and residents’ quality of life.
