London’s Green Belt exists for the long-term benefit of everyone who lives in the capital. It protects open countryside, limits urban sprawl and preserves precious green spaces for future generations.
Sadiq Khan has now changed his position and is actively exploring building homes on parts of the Green Belt. He presents this as an answer to London’s housing crisis, but it risks sacrificing protected land as a short-term response to his failure to deliver enough homes on suitable brownfield sites.
Once Green Belt land is lost, it cannot simply be restored.
