Lord True speaking to Conservative Party Memembers in Whitton

Heathfield Conservatives were delighted to welcome Lord True, former Leader of Richmond Council and former Leader of the House of Lords, as guest speaker at their Christmas Curry Night.

Lord True has had a remarkable career in public service. Before entering ministerial office, he served as Leader of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames from 2010 to 2017, and earlier worked as Deputy Head of the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit under Sir John Major from 1990 to 1994. He later served as Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords from September 2022 to July 2024.

In that role, Lord True took part in one of the most historic moments of modern British public life, signing the Accession papers for His Majesty King Charles III following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Only the previous evening, Lord True had been at Buckingham Palace for the State Banquet held in honour of the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, during the Qatari State Visit. His attendance reflected the important role he continues to play in national public life, drawing on his experience at the highest levels of government, Parliament and the constitution.

Speaking to local members, Lord True reflected on his time leading Richmond Council and remembered the work done by the Conservative administration to revitalise Whitton High Street, including the Yorkstone paving that helped improve the look and feel of the town centre. It was a reminder that Conservatives in local government have a strong record of getting things done and improving everyday places for local people.

Lord True also spoke about the important role of the House of Lords in scrutinising legislation. He explained that the Lords has a vital role in examining proposed laws in detail and holding the Government to account. As Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords, he now helps lead Conservative scrutiny of legislation, particularly as Labour does not have a majority in the upper chamber.

It was a fascinating evening and a valuable opportunity for members to hear from someone with deep experience of local government, national government and Parliament.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a very enjoyable Whitton and Heathfield Conservatives Christmas Curry Night.
