Conservatives Pledge One Hour Free Parking
Richmond Borough Conservatives will increase free local parking to one hour to support residents, high streets and local businesses.
Under the Liberal Democrats, parking has become more expensive and less convenient. Time and again, they have made life harder for residents who need to use their cars, while local shops are left to deal with declining trade.
Conservatives originally introduced 30 minutes of free parking to encourage people to stop and shop locally. Residents also received a 10% parking discount, rising to 20% for those aged over 75. But the Lib Dems have made the free parking period less valuable by stopping it being added to a longer stay, and they have scrapped the residents’ discount.
Older residents have been hit hardest
Many rely on their car for short local journeys, shopping, medical appointments and visiting friends or family. Making parking more expensive and less convenient risks leaving them isolated, while also driving trade away from local shops.
Save the high street
You cannot save the high street by making it harder for people to stop and shop locally.
A Conservative Council would make parking easier, support local retailers and help keep our town centres alive. We are committed to proper retail high streets, not seeing every parade of shops slowly turned into coffee shops, empty units and short-term uses.
