Overview

A new community building in Twickenham that will house a programme of cultural, entertainment and community activities, is in need of a name.

In 2014 Richmond Council granted planning consent for redevelopment of the Post Office site in Twickenham. As part of the permission, the developers agreed to build a new community building on the Brewery Wharf site – opposite Twickenham train station. The building will house a theatre space with over 300 seats, six multi-purpose studio rooms, cinema and catering facilities. Over the past 12 months, the Council has been working on the plans for how the new centre should be used. Currently, the authority is out to tender for a commercial partner.

Over the next few weeks, the Council is looking to give the new facility a name. Residents are invited to submit their suggestions. They could be based on the geography, culture or heritage of the area, an inspiring word or just a name that suits. All suggestions will be presented to the Cabinet Member for Community and Voluntary Services, Cllr Susan Chappell, who will decide on the final name.

Cllr Susan Chappell, said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity. This new building will provide a high-class community facility for Twickenham. It will house a varied programme of entertainment, cultural, community and business interests – including a local cinema. Residents can see the building springing up. But we can’t call it the Community Building forever. It needs to have a name. This is a building for the community, therefore it is only fitting that the community are invited to let us know their suggestions. We are looking for an innovative, creative name that will be a lasting legacy for a building that will provide a new cultural and community heart to the local area.”
