Conservatives Warn Over Contentious Twickenham Riverside Plans

Conservatives have delivered a leaflet across central Twickenham warning residents about the Liberal Democrat Council’s contentious plans for Twickenham Riverside.

The scheme remains highly controversial, with significant local opposition from residents concerned about the loss of valued community space, the scale of development, traffic safety, parking pressures and the future of Diamond Jubilee Gardens.

One of the clearest concerns is that Café Sunshine, a much-loved facility which supports people with special needs, will not be replaced as part of the new scheme. Conservatives believe this represents the loss of an important local community asset.

There are also serious concerns that the replacement open playground will not be as attractive to families as the current enclosed, safe and secure play area. For many parents, the existing layout provides reassurance and makes the gardens a more practical place to visit with young children.

The Council’s original promises for Twickenham Riverside were presented as offering major community benefits. However, many of those benefits have now been stripped out, leaving residents questioning whether the final scheme still reflects what local people were originally told they would receive.

Concerns also remain about the proposed buildings, the use of space, the loss of parking, the movement of vehicles through the site and whether the plans will create a riverside that is genuinely welcoming, safe and accessible for all.

Conservatives believe Twickenham Riverside should be improved, but not at the expense of valued community facilities, family-friendly public space or proper transparency over what residents are actually getting.

Residents deserve a scheme that enhances the riverside, protects important local amenities and reflects the views of the community.
