Labour’s plan to impose VAT on independent school fees was repeatedly raised with Conservative campaigners during an evening canvassing session in South Twickenham.
Local residents spoke about the important role independent schools play in Twickenham constituency, both for families and the wider education system. Jonathan Hulley said: “The vital role played by our Independent schools in the Twickenham constituency was a topic of conversation and concern.”
The policy could place additional pressure on family finances and may lead some parents to move their children into the state sector, increasing demand for local school places.
Twickenham Conservatives said the issue is especially relevant locally because of the number of families in the constituency with children at independent schools, as well as the contribution those schools make to employment, community life and educational choice.
Local Conservatives said they would continue to oppose what they described as an ideological tax on aspiration and parental choice.
