Conservatives Force Labour into Winter Fuel U Turn

Thank you for singing Winter Fuel Petition
Winter Fuel Petition Victory

After more than a year of determined campaigning, Conservatives have forced Labour into a humiliating U turn over its cruel cuts to Winter Fuel Payments.

More than 330,000 people signed the Conservative petition calling on the Government to reverse the decision, including hundreds of residents here in Twickenham. Together, they sent a clear message that pensioners should not be left choosing between heating and other essential household bills.

Labour ignored those concerns for months. Only after sustained public pressure and relentless campaigning did Keir Starmer’s Government finally admit it had got this policy wrong.

General Elections Have Consequences

Last year’s General Election put Labour into Government. In Twickenham, the Liberal Democrats asked voters to back them, but the result nationally was a large Labour majority with the power to introduce policies like these cuts to Winter Fuel Payments.

The Liberal Democrats may claim to oppose Labour locally, but every Liberal Democrat vote that failed to elect a Conservative MP made it easier for Labour to secure the majority needed to push through damaging policies.

This is a reminder that General Elections are about more than choosing a local MP. They decide who governs Britain and who makes the decisions that affect every family.

Thank You to Everyone Who Supported the Campaign

We would like to thank the hundreds of people across Twickenham who signed our petition and helped keep the pressure on. Your support was part of a national campaign that Labour could no longer ignore.

While we welcome this U turn, it should never have happened in the first place. Millions of pensioners have spent months worrying about how they would heat their homes because of a decision that was always wrong.

Keir Starmer should now apologise to the pensioners his Government put through a year of unnecessary anxiety.

Twickenham Conservatives will continue standing up for local residents, holding Labour to account and campaigning for common sense policies that put pensioners and taxpayers first.
